Week 4 Q 1 Cutural meanings
Northern California is a culture within a culture that creats meaning to many different words. Usually the younger culture seems to shape these words and uses these words for different meanings. We use words like tight and sick when we see something that looks or is cool. These words are built in our culture because we are being unique and different. Without thinking about it we are creating a different vocabularyy just like people do in cultures worldwide. I believe a place like California creates more distinct differences in meanings than other cultures so it does vary but everyone does do it. Creating meaning is a culture unity and a connection we build for our generation that makes us different than the last and future. It is a good thing to accept because people can share that cultural common vocabulary and i think this helps the community grow and function more effectively together.

Hi DrewSJSU,
ReplyDeleteI do agree with you that Northern California has its own cultural views, traditions, and words that only people who live in Northern California would understand. One prime example is that people from Southern California cannot except the word "Hella" that originated from Northern California. They do not understand why some people from the bay area use that word and cannot make sense of it. Northern Californians believes that it is a really neat way of saying "hell-of" and using it to exaggerate a statement. Southern Californians also have their ways of doing things that some people may never understand. I am not from Southern California but when I went down there 2 weeks ago, noticed a lot of people were very fashionable. Fashion and materials is really big down there. If you do not have the highest fashion trend, you are not a part of the "in" crowd. This is how they view the world down there; people can be very materialistic and base their relationships on what they do and how rich they are. It may not be case for every relationship but it is certainly true of some relationships.

ReplyDeleteI cannot agree with you more. The words "culture unity" tie so well with this perspective because each culture instills a view of what the world is. For istance, a child who is born into a specific culture knows no other until he/she encounters a different culture. Perhaps, a child born in the midwest is unaware of his/her outside world especially if they are not in touch with the media.
I don't want to sound stereotypical of people from the midwest but hey, maybe thats a form of communication that I know through my surroundings.
